Orenburg is the administrative center of Orenburg Oblast, Russia located along the Ural River close to the border with Kazakhstan, 1478km southeast of Moscow. Orenburg is the regional center of education and has a number of cultural institutions and museums. The city is in the basin of the middle current of the River Ural and the highest point of the city is 154.4 meters.
In 1734, the Russian Empire began to expand its control and influence in Asia starting from the construction of the fortress city called «Orenburg» on its eastern border. In 1735 a settlement has been founded for this purpose at the place where Or and the Ural rivers join. This has been named as «Fortress near the Or», as is Burg German for the fortress. Later, the name of this settlement has been changed to Orsk. While an attempt was made to found another Orenburg around 175km (109mi) west at a location called Krasnodar, or «Red Hill», unfortunately, this settlement has failed. In 1743 a third Orenburg was successfully established by Ivan Neplyuyev at its present location approximately 250km (160mi) west down the Ural from Orsk in 1743. Hence the third Orenburg functioned as an important military outpost 1744 on the center for the Orenburg Cossacks.
